Neue Seite

One little Bird
Diary of Torica, accountant of the great benevolent masarin Nefrete in Garguna, recorded in the year 1621 after the Dawn.

Earth Season – Fertility Week
Gods Day
Today Torica feels the time is right that she wants to further explore the Fida'Is cult. She was already attracted to the temple while exploring the city with Haftah but only now seems the time is right. So that Malian and Bencali are sorted for food and shelter she makes sure all is arranged at the inn so she can go and explore the Sun cult in her own time. She just makes sure that the room is paid for some weeks to come and there is always a hot meal to come home to for the two of them. Haftah joins Torica in her quest and goes with her to the temple.

When they arrive at the temple Haftah and Torica are dazzled by the beauty of the temple. It is a golden building – it seems to shine extremely bright in the sun unlike any other buildings Torica has ever seen. The temple is a round building with three entrance gates, also all covered in gold painting. In front of each Gate there are three guards, and each has a statue of a...well it looks bird like....The first entrance's statue is in the flying position, the second one seems to be hatching and the third is dying.

On this bright midmorning, Torica and Haftah decide to first explore the entrance which is guarded by the hatching bird statue. It is the Eastern facing gate. The hall they enter is roughly triangular shaped and is full of people. Some people are gathered around small fires meditating, starring into the flames. Then on the right there is a group of people listening to someone telling stories. On the left and the right wall of the room there are big heavy double doors. No-one seems to be going through them but when looking up, Torica realises that the walls are not completely closed at the top, there are many gaps in the walls so the birds flying around the temple can freely fly between all rooms. Some fly inside the room, or go behind the wall into the next rooms. After a little while Torica decides to join the group listening to stories. Instantly she gets drawn into the story – the story is being told so animated by the beautiful story teller, that Torica gets lost in the words. Although the story sounds familiar she does not remember all the fine details he manages to include. She listens for hours. Every time he finishes the story he does not start a new one, but continues telling the same story again and again and again. Torica listens like the others for a long time. Eventually Torica realises that she has been ignoring her body but it is very clearly telling her that she is very hungry and thirsty. The person next to her must have heard Torica's stomach rumbling because without asking Torica hears the words whispered to her - 'you should resist temptation – don't give in'. So Torica tries and eventually wins over her stomach and dry throat and stays listening to the priest. After a long day he finishes and everybody gets up to leave the temple. The priest welcomes Torica and Haftah into the temple and tells them a little bit about life at the temple.

Meanwhile...
Malian uses the time Torica and Haftah are at the temple to find some paying work in the city. Walking around the city he feels that he is being followed by someone. He cannot see anyone suspicious but the feeling does not go away. Malian eventually, after knocking on many doors, finds a shop owner that agrees to give him work doing some repairs. He will have four weeks of work.

Walking around the market for some goods for trading, Bencali spots one of the black coated guys. So quickly, without hesitating he decides to go back to the boat and fetch one of his slaves to help. When they both return to the market the black coated guy is nowhere to be found. Since there is no black coated guy Bencali sends his slave back to the boat to conclude today's business deals on his own. Eventually when business is done he also goes back to the boat.

The next day, after sunrise, Torica and Haftah are leaving again for the day to go back to the temple. Today Torica tries to meditate herself around one of the fires. She finds it an interesting experience but her thoughts are dominated by thinking about the handsome priest and his story he told yesterday. It keeps on going around her head.

For the next few days Torica and Haftah continue going to the temple after sunrise. Although they experience new stories, new things and learn the art of meditating, the days are pretty much the same.

Earth Season – Truth Week
Wild Day
Back at the temple Rogalam, the priest Torica met on the first day, asks for her to tell a story today. Torica accepts his wishes and sits down to tell a story. She makes up a story and tells the story over and over again. Just like Rogalam did and all the others since. She continues until she is just too tired to continue. Once she has finished and the group of listeners have gone to meditate near the fires, Rogalan asks where the story is from, since it seemed a very strange ending. After they agree it was a very badly made up story, Torica agrees that next time she is the one telling stories, she will stick to stories about gods and not made up things. Torica and Haftah return the inn exhausted. The next day Torica gets the great news from Rogalam that she is now allowed to go to one of the other rooms through the big double doors which have been intriguing Torica since the first day. She is free to choose whichever one she wants, the 'Flight Wing' or the 'Death Wing'.

miniatur|Myrajelma is a devotee of Fida'Is and head priestess of of the Flight Wing of the Fida'Is temple in Temissrah. She never stands still and appears to be floating. Her golden hair looks lime fire.

Torica opens the heavy double doors to the 'Flight Wing'. This room is completely different to the 'Birth Wing'. Many birds are flying freely around the room. There are nests, water places, trees and openings for the birds to fly out. There are 17 slaves cleaning the room of any bird poo, there are people feeding the birds and there are people just watching the birds. Torica watches a lad walking around the room – or is she hovering? She comes close to Torica and welcomes her into the room. Her hair golden and wavy and her movement now closer to see, is like a flame in a fire. She never stays still while talking to Torica – swaying from side to side. Her name is Myrajelma and she agrees with Torica that she can watch the birds and tomorrow after Torica has a chance to get some bird food, tomorrow she can feed the birds.

The next day and another few days, Torica and Haftah buy the bird food on the market on the way to the temple. They feed the birds and watch the birds fly around the room, coming in and out of the room and just generally try to study the birds behaviour.

Meanwhile...
Four weeks have passed and Malian has done all of his work in the shop. As payment as agreed between Malian and the shopkeeper, Malian gets handed a saw. Not a very good one and Malian rejects this as payment. He wants a better one, so after some discussions, they both agree that for an extra two weeks of work Malian will receive a better saw. Malian continues to feel a presence of a black coated guy. He does not see him very often, just manages to catch a glimpse so he knows it is only occasionally that he gets followed, not every day...like someone is checking up on him.

Earth Season – Harmony Week
Water Day
After days and weeks of watching the birds in the 'Flight Room', Torica slowly starts understanding some of the birds' behaviour. Some of it is still random but some things begin to make sense. Myrajelma – the priestess with golden hair Torica met on the first day in this room - tells Torica about a nest of young birds who just lost their parents and they need feeding. Torica agrees to get to the nest and feed the little birds. To get to the nest Torica realises she has to climb up a wall, but since she is determined to get to the little birds, she eventually manages to climb up and reaches the nest. She feeds the birds as much as she can.

Clay Day
The next day, Torica returns to the temple expecting to be able to help again with the little birds but instead Myrajelma goes up to her and tells her that she is ready to go into the next room. Without much hesitation Torica goes up to the big heavy double doors and opens it slowly. She goes carefully through the door to enter the 'Death Room'. Here she finds a scene of a half naked man hanging from the ceiling on ropes. There are metal hooks inside his flesh that hold his body on the ropes. He is heavily bleeding out of his wounds. He tries very hard to hang straight or in balance on the ropes, just like a bird in flight. There are five people around him in golden dresses just standing there, watching him. Torica decides to join their circle around the hanging man. Every time the hanging man starts to fall asleep or into a trance of pain, one of the people standing around him goes up closer to the hanging man and slaps him, just so he wakes again. After a few times the guys look at Torica as if to say 'it's your turn', so she goes up and slaps him. This goes on for a while, until sundown. The man hanging gives a sign to all of the people in golden dresses that he is finished for the day and that it is time for him to come down. They all get him down and attend his wounds and then leave to go home.

Going back to the temple Torica and Haftah do not see anybody hanging off the ceiling for a few days, but there is combat training going on inside the 'Death Room'. As they are watching the going ons, Emicala – the priestess comes up to Torica and Haftah and tells them that they can join any of the training groups. So they do for the next few days.

Malian makes sure that at the end of Earth season he goes into his temple to worship Ennung.

Darkness Season – Fertility Week
Gods Day
Back at the Fida'Is temple Torica sees a man coming into the 'Death Room'. He seems of very high authority within the temple. Everybody he walks past, bows and shows respect. He walks through the room and talks to Emicala and signs for Torica to come over.

He starts talking to Torica but she does not understand. All she can hear is a sizzling noise, like rustling fire. It literally sounds like a burning fire rather than a human language. Torica asks Emicala to translate for her so she can talk to the High Priest. Emicala does not translate, but gets a slave for Torica who can translate. Angamix - the High Priest of this temple asks if Torica has proof that her mistress has asked her to join a cult. Her word as a slave is not enough. She has to produce the hard proof of her masarin before he can accept that she is allowed to join their temple. After this short encounter and with the task to get the proof from Nefrete.

Torica leaves the temple to go back to the inn. Immediately she knows the fastest route to get the proof is to ask Bencali to sail back home and get a letter from Nefrete confirming the finding of a cult. Bencali is not at the inn so Torica quickly writes a letter explaining the situation to Nefrete and goes to search for him in the harbour. He is not there either, so Torica keeps coming back to the harbour day after day....until....

She sees Bencali's ship come back into the harbour. Before he even has time to get off the ship and greet Torica, Torica bursts out with the whole story, the urgency and her need of Bencali's help. Bencali immediately agrees to turn around and go back to Garguna to give the letter to Nefrete and return with her answer. He arrives back in Garguna after a straight two day sailing trip and rushes to see Nefrete. He gets greeted by her guards and explains the situation. The guard goes in and after a few hours comes out and hands Bencali the reply letter. He rushes back to the boat and sets sail for Tavu et Teba.

Meanwhile...
Working away in the shop in Tavu et Teba, Malian comes across a black coated guy again. This time he decides to follow him and try and catch him. Unfortunately he looses him in an alley way and never catches him.

After a few days sailing Bencali arrives back with good news of a reply letter. He hands it over to Torica in the inn. She is so excited and has to rush to the temple to hand the letter over to Angamix. She had to show him that it was true that she had been specifically asked by Nefrete to join a cult. So she made her way to the temple but Angamix is not there and does not come all day. She sits and waits, returns to the inn in the evening and returns to the temple next morning. Three days later Angamix comes out of the prayers room and meets with Torica. He takes the letter and without even reading it hands it to Emicala. He tells Torica she really has to proof she is worthy of joining the Fida'Is. She has to find a special place to meditate and become close to Fida'Is.

Puzzled Torica goes back to the inn in the evening after sundown and shares her experience with Haftah, Bencali and Malian. They all start thinking about special places to meditate and finally...Malian has an idea! Torica should climb on top of the roof of the temple and mediate there before sunrise.

So the next day before sunrise, Torica, helped by Malian and Bencali, climbs onto the roof of the temple and starts meditating. She meditates for a while through sunrise and feels very close to Fida'Is. There - between the sun god's place in the sky and the sun god's place on earth - she make a link. And it worked, Torica feels incredible good having been that deeply connected and trance-like. After this new life experience Torica comes down off the roof and goes into the temple to see Angamix. He is there and speaks with Torica but again like the first time and the last time she just cannot understand him. Only this time she has the impression that the words are actually warm, almost as if she could feel them. So the slave translates for Torica again. Again he is rather unimpressed and relatively dismissive towards Torica and gives her the next task. Torica needs to do something special for a bird, to a bird or with a bird. Once he finished setting the task, he disappears into the prayer chambers again.

Puzzled again about what she should do, Torica returns to the inn to discuss what she could do with Malian, Bencali and Haftah.

Meanwhile...
After Torica has finished her meditation, Malian returns to the inn for breakfast. The inn keeper takes Malian to one side and tells him that there is a man in his room and he should wait for the rest of the group to come back. Malian being Malian ignores the advice and rushes up to the room to have a look. He sneaks to the outside to go around and have look into the room through the window without the man noticing. Malian does not recognise him but he is a black coated guy, just sitting in the middle of the room on a chair waiting for them to come through the door.

So Malian decides to take matters into his own hands and goes in through the window. Still unnoticed Malian draws his working hammer high and slams it at the intruder. Only she misses him by an inch, almost hits his own knee, before the hammer crushes into the floor with a loud bang. The black coated guy just turns around and tells Malian that he just wants to talk to Torica (Kastor). Then he knocks Malian out. The black coat sits back down on the chair to wait.

Torica and Haftah return to the inn from a day at the temple, still trying to figure out what Torica should do for the latest challenge. As before, the inn keeper tells them both about the man waiting for them in their room and advises them to stay away. Torica and Haftah go up the stairs and enter the room. They see Malian unconscious on the floor and the black coated man sitting in the chair in the middle of the room. As soon as he sees Torica (Kastor), he gets up to get closer. Haftah tries to step in between the two but the black coated man signals 'not necessary'. He speaks to Torica. 'I am here to speak freely' he says. 'I have a message from your friend Istam. He approves of what you do, thinks it is very wise. If you need any help from him, contact him.' He hands Torica an amulet on his way out. Torica recognises it – it is exactly like the one Malian took from the dead black coated guy he found behind the inn a few weeks ago...

Haftah follows the black coated guy to see where he is going and maybe to find out what this amulet has to do with 'getting in touch with Istam'. She finds the house where all of the black coated guys seem to gather with two guards on the front door. The black coated guy shows the amulet and gets let in. She returns quickly to the inn to report what she found.

While telling Bencali, Torica and Malian from her findings, there is a knock on the door....It is the inn keeper to let Haftah know that there is a friend waiting downstairs in the bar for her. She goes downstairs...

Darkness Season – Illusion Week
Wind Day
Haftah tells Torica from her chat. Istam might be the same person as Ishtar, the leader of the city's underworld, who controls the black coated men and the black market. The city Jann has put money on his head – maybe an opportunity to make a fortune?

Bencali sets off to go to the town hall to find out about the ownership of the house that seems to be the base of the black coated guys. On his return he can report that Kastor is the owner....

The next day, still on her quest to do something special to a bird, with a bird or for a bird, Torica decides to get a rare bird for the temple as a gift. But how can she find out what birds already nest in the temple and what not? Torica sits in the Flight wing for hours trying to recognise all the birds in the hall. But after a while she must admit that there are just too many of them flying in and out, never holding still. Next she asks the priestess Myrajelma. But she is either unwilling or unable to help. Eventually Torica notices again that there are 17 slaves around her, cleaning bird poo. When she speaks to one them, the slave winces as if expects a beating. His name is Laman and he is a rather strange character. It turns out that he has no formal education and does not know any bird names, but he remembers all the birds he has ever seen and can distinguish and describe them by their appearance and behaviour. And apparently Laman has lived all his life in this very hall, so this is a step in the right direction. But how can she find a what birds Laman does not know?

Back in the inn Bencali has the idea to show Laman pictures of as many birds as possible.
miniatur|This is a painting by a scholar of the Knowing God, depicting a bird Oola-Oola-valley south of Temissrah.
Bencali and Torica go the temple of the Knowing God. They meet a young apprentice who tells them about a scholar who travelled all Pamaltela for many years. He made numerous notes on all kinds of strange animals, including many birds. For a donation of six new, unwritten books the apprentice allows them to borrow all six volumes of the scholar's notes. Torica shows Laman the book, who is fascinated by the pictures, because he has never seen a book before. After a while a finds a bird with red and blue feathers that he has never seen before. According to the notes the scholar had encountered it in the Oola-Oola-valley on the banks of the Rana River.

To get the bird, Torica decides to get Bencali to sail over to Temissrah to see if one of his trading contacts can get a pair of this rare breed or at least one so she can take it back to the temple. So all of them, Bencali, Torica, Haftah and Malian and all of Bencali's slaves make their way on Bencali's boat to Temissrah. They take all their belongings and take what they need on the boat and what they don't they store in Bencali's office. It is Dark season and the see is still calm and so the three days of sailing go smoothly and Malian has nearly finished the cage he is making for the birds. Arriving in Temissrah, they are overwhelmed by the beauty of the place. The bay is beautiful, it is a big city, lots of ships in its massive harbour. Nothing like they have seen before – three times the one they just left in Tavu et Teba.

After arrivals and tying the boat onto a landing place, all of them go off to the market to see what they see. Bencali starts ordering timber and other things for trading in Tavu et Teba, he asks for a Hibiskus plant (that was his bargain to get the information in the city hall about the house of the black coated guys) and of course he asks for the rare birds.

On their return they see a man standing on the side of the harbour wearing an amulet like Torica just received before leaving Tavu et Teba and Malian got from the dead black coated man...........
